Tucson-Based Universal Avionics Systems Corporation Acquired by Elbit Systems Ltd.

Company News

Tucson, AZ - April 11, 2018 – Universal Avionics Systems Corporation announces the closing of  the acquisition process in which it has been acquired by Elbit Systems Ltd. (NASDAQ and TASE: ESLT). Following the closing, Universal Avionics became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Elbit Systems.

Headquartered in Tucson, Arizona, Universal Avionics employs over one-third of the company’s full-time employees at its corporate location, which includes Manufacturing, Product and Customer Support, Flight Test, Certification, Marketing and Sales activities.

Paul DeHerrera, CEO of Universal Avionics, says, “We see this as a really exciting time at Universal Avionics - a new chapter in our long history of being a technology leader in Southern Arizona. Elbit Systems has expressed to us that they look forward to growing our company, which is great news for Tucson.”

Tucson has been home to Universal Avionics’ headquarters since the company’s early years, moving here from California in 1988. Its corporate campus, located near Tucson International Airport (TIA), has grown in size as the company has steadily increased market share over the past 37 years, now encompassing nearly 165,000 sq. ft. of space. In addition, the company’s product flight testing activities are conducted here in Tucson, utilizing two business aircraft that are based out of its hangar facility at TIA. The company’s cutting edge manufacturing facility features advanced automated circuit board assembly, final unit assembly and environmental test technologies.

Recently, Universal Avionics received the Southern Arizona Technology Council’s ‘Member Organization of the Year’ award. This honor recognizes the company’s support and alignment with the AZ Tech Council’s vision to make Arizona the fastest growing technology hub in the nation, and to connect and empower Arizona’s technology community.

Since its incorporation in 1981, Universal Avionics was a privately-owned corporation, specializing in flight management systems (FMS) and advanced display systems for a range of commercial aviation market segments.

Universal Avionics is known for its popular “UNS-1” series FMS, which has been installed as OEM-production and retrofit since 1982. Its current product line includes a range of products including integrated EFIS Displays, Communications Management Units, Radio Control Units, Terrain Awareness Warning Systems, Synthetic Vision, Cockpit Voice Recorders and Attitude Heading Reference Systems.

Elbit Systems Ltd. is an international high technology company engaged in a wide range of defense, homeland security and commercial programs throughout the world. The company operates in the areas of aerospace, land and naval systems, command, control, communications, computers, intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance ("C4ISR"), unmanned aircraft systems, advanced electro-optics, electro-optic space systems, EW suites, signal intelligence systems, data link and communications systems, radios and cyber-based systems.

Through this acquisition by Elbit Systems, Universal Avionics will be able to take advantage of new opportunities by expanding further into new commercial market segments and programs.
